Brussels Sprouts
Take apart all layers.
Water Check:
- Separate the leaves and immerse in mildly salted, warm water (1 tablespoon to a large bowl) for 3 to 5 minutes. A white bowl should be used to make it easier to spot any insects. The leaves should not be matted or entangled, nor should they be overcrowded. There should be ample space for the water to surround each leaf. Fill the bowl with as much water as possible, without overflowing.
- Swirl the leaves vigorously in the water.
- After soaking, remove the leaves carefully so as not to remove any bugs that may be floating on the water surface. Make sure that water dripping from the leaves drips back into the bowl.
- Carefully check the water surface and sides of the bowl for insects. Place a white plate below the water surface so that bugs will be seen against it. If unsure if a speck is dirt or an insect, remove it from the bowl and examine it, using a magnifying glass if necessary.
- The leaves may be used if the first check is clear, or after two consecutive clear checks.
